Through the launch of the ‘Green Spaces at the Workplace’ contest, the company aligns the environmental performance of the Greenstone Siana Gold Project and the TVIRD Balabag Gold and Silver Project with daily corporate life. The initiative reinforces that sustainability is not limited to compliance milestones; but rather, it is practiced consistently in offices and workspaces across all levels of the organization.
Designed to cascade environmental responsibility from management to employees, ‘Green Spaces’ positions sustainability as a shared discipline rather than a top-down directive.
Scaling the Mindset
Building on its experience in rehabilitating degraded landscapes in Surigao del Norte and restoring mined-out areas in Zamboanga del Sur, TVIRD is encouraging employees to apply the same restorative mindset within their immediate work environments.
Greenstone Environment and Compliance Officer Engr. Erthelgin Joy Jarabe believes in making sustainability visible and habitual. By redesigning offices with living plants and recycled materials, teams are reminded that environmental care begins in everyday spaces, reflecting the project’s own recovery and redevelopment following the TSF3 incident.
At Balabag, the initiative reinforces the idea that environmental responsibility extends beyond compliance and translates into daily practice. As Environment Department Manager Jjam Cutillas EnP noted, “The ‘Green Spaces at the Workplace’ initiative is more than compliance. It reflects our commitment to creating a healthier, more sustainable environment for our employees.”
Greening the Grind
Beyond environmental management, ‘Green Spaces’ also supports employee well-being in a demanding industry. By introducing greenery into administrative areas, the initiative also aims to improve air quality, reduce stress, and foster focus and mindfulness at work.
From the Balabag perspective, greener workspaces are seen as influencing behavior and discipline. Cutillas observed that “having greener spaces really changes the atmosphere. Employees feel more relaxed and focused, and when people work in a clean and green space, they naturally want to take care of it.” Similar outcomes are expected at Greenstone, where normalizing sustainability in offices reinforces habits that extend to on-site operations.
Sustaining the Commitment
The initiative also mirrors the operational histories of both sites, drawing from Balabag’s transformation from unregulated mining and Greenstone’s redevelopment of the Siana Gold Project. Departments are required not only to create green spaces, but to maintain them over time, reinforcing TVIRD’s adherence to ISO 14001:2015 standards on continuous improvement
