Sustainable development and responsibility ensure a thriving future for everyone. Part of TVIRD’s duty involves the protection, rehabilitation, and improvement of the environment where it operates. By focusing on dedicated programs, the company makes sure that its initiatives leave a positive, lasting impact on both people and the natural environment.  TVIRD starts it right and keeps the end in mind – ensuring that its programs are truly meaningful.

Reforestation

Balabag’s Migligilian Central Agro-Forestry Nursery, named after the Subanen word for 'Kind Spirit', can house 250,000 endemic forest and fruit tree seedlings. Meanwhile, the Simbol and Genaro Satellite Nurseries accommodate close to a combined 100,000 seedlings. Both are intended for the company’s mine rehabilitation activities.

A Non-Mist Clonal Protocol for tall Dipterocarp tree species has likewise been established to help with rehabilitation and revegetation within the MPSA area, supporting a sustainable ecosystem for future generations.

In addition, TVIRD regularly organizes tree-planting activities and initiatives, and provides lectures on environmental protection during these events, which typically align with major environmental observances like World Environment Day and Arbor Day. It is also actively involved in the National Greening Program (NGP) and the Mining Forest Program (MFP). As of CY 2023, the company has planted over 1.7 million trees across all its projects.

The company has its own Deputized Environment and Natural Resources Officers (DENRO), also known as “Bantay Gubat” (forest guardians). In coordination with the country’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), 20 employees from the company’s Security Department and 19 other officers were deputized under the agency’s Regional Special Order No. 0243 and 0265.

The initiative aims to raise community awareness for the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001 (R.A. 9147) and the Revised Forestry Code of the Philippines (PD 705).

Rehabilitation

Bae Lanawen, Agata's thematic landscaping tourist area, was introduced as Caraga's first eco-tourism concept in an active mining area and was part of the company’s mine rehabilitation efforts. Today, Agata is implementing its Final Rehabilitation Program in its former nickel mine, further ensuring the sustainability of its natural environment.

Meantime, TVIRD’s maiden project, Canatuan, today is five times “greener” than before. TVIRD has planted and grown over 400,000 trees during its operations – which is five times higher in terms of forest density compared to before the company operated. Nearly 140,000 Cash Crops are part of the company’s Final Rehabilitation Program in Canatuan.
