Advancing Responsible Mining Through Stakeholder Engagement and Transparent Oversight
A centerpiece for sustainability. The company reently established the Greenstone Solar Farm – a fully operational 5.3 Megawatt-Peak facility in Q1 2026 – constructed ahead of the Multi-Partite Monitoring Team Inspection for the same period.Makati City, Philippines / May 2025 – At the core of every responsible mining operation is a commitment that encompasses mere resource extraction and processing. This is the commitment to restore, protect, and sustain the environment for future generations – way beyond the life of the mine.
This obligation was once again demonstrated by TVIRD’s wholly owned subsidiary, Greenstone Resources Corporation (GRC), during the Multipartite Monitoring Team inspection for Q1 2026. The on-site assessment was conducted at the company’s Siana Gold Project in Surigao del Norte last 25-28 May 2026.
In addition to routine compliance, the recent engagement served as a platform for collaboration among stakeholders united by a common objective: to ensure that environmental protection and mine rehabilitation go hand-in-hand with mining operations.
Clean, sustainable energy
The inspection was jointly conducted by the DENR’s Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), host barangays, and various government line agencies who reviewed the company’s accomplishments and assessed sustainability programs implemented during the first quarter of the year.
One of the company’s landmark achievements for the period is the establishment of the Greenstone Solar Farm, which is designed to deliver 5.3 megawatt-peak (MWp) of renewable energy to support the Siana plant’s power requirements. The initiative is expected to significantly reduce environmental impact, cutting an estimated 4,100 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually equivalent to the environmental benefit of planting close to 190,000 trees.
The new facility is the TVIRD Group’s first foray into renewable energy and the only solar plant in the region owned and operated by a mining company.
Driving progressive rehabilitation
Discussions focused on the company’s ongoing progressive rehabilitation and improvements within the project area. The company emphasized that rehabilitation is an integral component of day-to-day operations and not merely a promise for the future.
“We uphold environmental protection every day through continuous monitoring, pollution prevention measures, and progressive rehabilitation initiatives. We strive to ensure that we operate in harmony with the environment,” said Greenstone Chief Pollution Control Officer Alexis Jareol.
The company’s progressive rehabilitation is conducted in mined-out areas parallel to active mining operations and was highlighted as a proactive and responsible approach to environmental management. The inspection also provided Greenstone an opportunity to showcase how its environmental programs translate into tangible, on-the-ground results.
Transparency and shared responsibility
The meetings highlighted the importance of transparency and inclusive stakeholder participation. By bringing together government, community representatives, and company leadership, the initiative fostered open dialogue and strengthened collective accountability in environmental protection.
“These engagements reinforce the importance of maintaining open communication with our regulators, host communities, and partner agencies to ensure that environmental commitments are effectively implemented,” said Greenstone Tenement Management and Compliance Superintendent Engr. Erthelgin Joy Jarabe, adding that the collaboration is both effective and inclusive.
Beyond compliance
As the mining industry continues to evolve, initiatives such as these reflect a broader shift toward sustainability and responsible resource development. For Greenstone, its sustainable practices are anchored on the restoration of ecosystems, building enduring partnerships with communities, and safeguarding the future – all of which go beyond mere compliance.
Moreover, these underscore the company’s commitment to balancing operational goals with environmental and social responsibilities – further reinforcing Greenstone’s contribution to the overall development of the Surigao del Norte region.
