Creating safer, more sustainable communities and reaffirming its commitment to its stakeholders

Mainit Municipality, Surigao del Norte / February 2025 – Amidst the rich landscape of Surigao del Norte, a new chapter of resilience unfolds.  Greenstone Resources Corporation (GRC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of TVI Resource Development Philippines Inc. (TVIRD) and operator of the Siana Gold Project, has taken a massive stride towards restoring hope in its host community.

In the wake of the tailings incident in 2024, the company has successfully rehomed the first batch of ten (10) affected families while another thirteen (13) will be rehomed by the second quarter this year, offering them a fresh start in “Villa Resilient” – a new community developed by the company in Barangay Siana, Mainit Municipality of this Province.  This first batch of families were among those directly affected by the incident and who were temporarily housed by the Greenstone in its accommodations facilities.

Each two-bedroom house has a floor area of 35 square meters, with a bare-finished floors, tiled sinks and toilet and bath.  The relocation program estimated at P45 million includes the land acquisition cost and complete development of the area, which ensures a comfortable and conducive living environment for its tenants.

Working hand-in-hand with concerned local government units, line agencies and community representatives, Greenstone facilitated a smooth transition for the displaced families, prioritizing their immediate needs while ensuring the sustainability of the program.

Rebuilding Lives, Strengthening Communities

The relocation program underscores Greenstone’s social responsibility and commitment to community development.  The company has gone beyond mere housing solutions to deliver comprehensive support services that help families regain their footing: access to utilities, livelihood assistance and community integration activities.  Moreover, the company remains steadfast in restoring normalcy and creating the right opportunities for these families to flourish as a new community.

“More than simply providing homes for our community members to live in, Villa Resilient is a lasting symbol of your determination to thrive despite the challenges.  Barangay Siana remains solid and even stronger than before,” expressed Greenstone President and General Manager Engineer Anthony B. Quijano to the beneficiaries during the turnover ceremony.

In the ongoing relocation and community development process, Greenstone remains transparent, ensuring that every step – from planning to execution – is communicated openly with all stakeholders. Consultations, community meetings, and site visits are integral in addressing their concerns, fostering trust and ensuring that the necessities of all affected families are prioritized.

“Moving into a new home brings a special kind of anticipation for every family – a fresh start and looking towards the future with hope.  May these houses inspire all of you to create something to look forward to, especially your children’s future,” Quijano shared with the families.

A better life

For the families who have settled into the new homes, the transition marked a new beginning.  Many residents expressed that the new houses provide them significantly better living conditions, validating the company’s efforts to improving their quality of life.

“On behalf of the new residents of Villa Resilient, I would like to thank Greenstone for never leaving us behind.  We feel like children who stumbled, but Greenstone was there to help us stand again,” said Siana resident, Edith Dairo.

To date, Greenstone continues to work alongside its stakeholders to implement long-term solutions for the community, ensuring that its programs serve the needs of the people.  Moreover, it ensures that its mining operations supports social progress and contributes to the dignity, wellbeing and resilience of its communities.
