Underscoring the company’s undeterred commitment to safety and emergency response

Team Resilient! The Greenstone Emergency Response Team receives top honors and a cash prize from Surigao del Norte Governor Robert Lyndon S. Barbers at the tailend of the first-ever Rescuelympics.

Surigao City, Philippines / July 2024 – The Emergency Response Team (ERT) of Greenstone Resources Corporation (GRC) was recently awarded overall champion in the Industrial Category of the first Governor’s Rescuelympics in the capital city of Surigao del Norte Province, which hosts the company’s Siana Gold Project.  The team received top honors and dedicated their victory to Greenstone’s enduring commitment to safety and emergency response for the community.

The event was held in observance of this year’s National Disaster Resilience Month, featuring the theme, “Bantayog ng Katatagan at ang Pagbubuklod sa Layuning Kahandaan” (Testament to Integrity and Unity in Readiness).

The event actively promotes disaster and emergency preparedness as well as fostering a culture of resiliency among the residents of Surigao del Norte, which is prone to adverse natural phenomena such as earthquakes and extreme weather.

The competition was participated by counterpart teams from other mining companies, various other industries, and rescue teams from different municipalities within the province, highlighting multisectoral efforts to enhance emergency preparedness and safety standards in the region.

Spirit of competition

The company’s Emergency Response Team excelled in several Rescuelympics events, winning the Tower Blitz Competition, Ultimate Rescue Challenge, Community Fire Busters, and Moving & Lifting Challenge – victories that secured them the champion’s trophy in the Industrial Category along with a cash prize.

In addition to their recent triumph, the Greenstone team was also recognized earlier this year in February as the Regional Fire Olympic champion by the Bureau of Fire Protection of Caraga, where the team prevailed in events such as Major Rescue and Transfer Relay, Flammable Liquid Fire Extinguishment, and a combination of Busted Hose and Up-the-Ladder Relay competition.  The following month, the team cornered the overall first runner-up award at the National Fire Olympics held in Baguio City.

Commitment

The team’s performance in successive safety competitions highlights their exceptional level of alertness, organization and teamwork, as well as Greenstone’s commitment towards emergency preparedness.

“I am incredibly proud of our team’s victory in this competition.  Winning the championship highlights the company’s strong commitment to emergency preparedness and resilience,” according to Safety and Health Department Manager and concurrent Emergency Response Team leader Aldrin Arieta, who also spoke highly of the team’s dedication in practicing each day, rain or shine.

“Greenstone also remains dedicated to fostering a culture of safety within its beneficiary communities, and for whom we conduct orientations and trainings on emergency preparedness,” Arieta added.

Across its organization, the company truly embodies the mindset of “Safety begins with me; let’s go for ZERO accident.”  To date, it has generated over 6.9 million safe man hours with Zero Lost Time Due to Accidents since the restart of operations in Siana.
