TVIRD expands Corporate Affairs team

To implement the next phase of our program to bring truly sustainable development to the communities we touch, and to expand our level of engagement with all our stakeholders, TVI Resource Development Phils, Inc. (TVIRD) has strengthened its Corporate Affairs Office with the appointment of three new team members to head up the company’s programs in Social Commitment, Community Relations and Sustainable Development.Accordingly, the TVI group of companies welcomes:

Director, Social Commitment — Ed Coronel. Ed will provide overall co-ordination to TVIRD’s programs related to Social Commitment, Sustainable Development, Corporate Social Responsibility, Indigenous Peoples Affairs, and Human Rights.’ Initially, he will devote much of his time to heading up TVI’s efforts to establish a leadership role and best practices relating to the increasingly important issue of human rights and security; and he will lead the company’s liaison efforts with governments at all levels, the broader community in Mindanao, and international organizations.

Ed holds a Masters Degree in Development Management from the Asian Institute of Management and a B.Sc. in Commerce from West Negros College. He acted as Vice President, Corporate Affairs, for Western Mining Corporation in relation to the Tampakan Project from 1997 – 1999. He has recently acted as Executive Director of the Philippine Minerals Development Institute, advocating best practices in the mining industry; and the Foundation for Economic Freedom, advocating pro-market policies to the Philippines government.

Manager, Community Relations — Vic Bagasao . In this role, Vic will provide overall co-ordination to Community Relations for all our projects, including Canatuan, the Copper/Zinc Project, Balabag, and other new projects. He will take a hands-on role in leading the community relations for Canatuan and surrounding stakeholder communities, and especially in Siocon, in preparation for the development of the Copper/Zinc project in 2006.

Vic holds a Bachelor of Arts, Major in Sociology, from the University of the Philippines, and also attended the Program for Development Management at the Asian Institute of Management. Vic has 25 years of experience in community development, organizing marginalized sectors and people’s empowerment, community risk management, training and development as well as studies on the social and environmental impact of client’s operations. He took the lead in projects for community development in Arimco Mining Corporation in Quirino province, Marcopper Mining in Marinduque and Delta Gold Mining in Surigao.

In addition, TVI is pleased to announce that Ms. Elena (Bing) Damaso has accepted a position for the next six months as Consultant/Advisor, Sustainable Development: In this role, she will lead a team conducting an evaluation of the social and economic (baseline) situation of the Indigenous People stakeholders in our projects, and make recommendations for medium and long-term programs leading toward sustainable development for stakeholder communities. She will also co-ordinate with the Gempco team on program content and implementation, and lead our liaison and co-ordination activities with the NCIP, particularly in the formulation of the Ancestral Domain Sustainable Development and Protection Plan (ADSDPP) and documentation of cultural systems. Bing holds a BA from Notre Dame University and a Master’s in Philippine Society and Culture from the Asian Centre, University of the Philippines. She was recently Program Manager for the UNDP – NCIP Project Management Office activity on “Empowerment of Indigenous Peoples for Governance and Sustainable Development of Ancestral Domains. Prior to this position, she held key roles in UN High Commission on Refugees in East Timor, legislative lobby for the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act and the Organic Act for the ARMM. This, after many years working in applied anthropological research on social issues, issues related to peace and conflict resolution, tourism development, gender studies, minority rights and functional illiteracy.

All three will act together as a team, in close conjunction with Public Affairs (also under the Corporate Affairs Office), the TVI Canatuan Project Team, the Balabag Community Relations group, and Consultant Roy Lotzof, who is leading TVI’s efforts to promote the concept of Accelerated Area Integrated Development (Siocon to Ipil) based on mining.
